Navigating the pitfalls of relic neutrino detection

چکیده

Beta-spectrum of radioactive atoms was long ago predicted to bear an imprint the cosmic neutrino background ($\mathrm{C}\ensuremath{\nu}\mathrm{B}$) [S. Weinberg, Phys. Rev. 128, 1457 (1962)]. Over years, it has been recognized that best chance achieving signal-to-noise ratio required for observation this effect lies with solid-state designs [E. Baracchini et al., arXiv:1808.01892.]. Here we bring fore a fundamental quantum limitation on type beta-decayer can be used in such design. We derive simple usability criterion and show $^{3}\mathrm{H}$, which is most popular choice, fails meet it. provide list potentially suitable isotopes discuss why their use $\mathrm{C}\ensuremath{\nu}\mathrm{B}$ detection requires further research.

The Supernova Relic Neutrino Background

A Type II supernova (SN II ) – the explosion triggered by the gravitational collapse of a single massive star – emits 99% of its energy in neutrinos. The relic ν̄e background created by all past SN II is potentially detectable in present and/or future large underground neutrino detectors. One of the goals of the current SuperK and SNO detectors is to detect this SRN background [1,2]. The predict...

A Relic Neutrino Detector

Probably the most promising way of detecting cosmic neutrinos is measuring the mechanical force exerted by elastic scattering of cosmic neutrinos from macroscopic targets. The expected acceleration is ∼ 10cm/s for Dirac neutrinos of mass ∼ 10 eV and local density ∼ 10/cm. A novel torsion balance design is presented, which addresses the sensitivity-limiting factors of existing balances, such as ...

Relic Neutrino Absorption Spectroscopy

Resonant annihilation of extremely high-energy cosmic neutrinos on big-bang relic anti-neutrinos (and vice versa) into Z-bosons leads to sizable absorption dips in the neutrino flux to be observed at Earth. The high-energy edges of these dips are fixed, via the resonance energies, by the neutrino masses alone. Their depths are determined by the cosmic neutrino background density, by the cosmolo...

Relic neutrino clustering and implications for their detection

The standard big bang theory predicts the existence of 10 neutrinos per flavour in the visible universe. This is an enormous abundance unrivalled by any other known form of matter, falling second only to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) photon. Yet, unlike the CMB which boasts its first detection in the 1960s and which has since been observed and its properties measured to high accuracy in...

Prospect for relic neutrino searches

Neutrinos from the Big Bang are theoretically expected to be the most abundant particles in the Universe after the photons of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Unlike the relic photons, relic neutrinos have not so far been observed. The Cosmic Neutrino Background (CνB) is the oldest relic from the Big Bang, produced a few seconds after the Bang itself. Due to their impact in cosmology, rel...
